After years of study and part-time work, I am now, once again, fully adjusted to full-time employment, and a fairly long commute. It's hard, those first few days, when you return home, satisfied but exhausted. There's a list of chores to be done, and I would lazily pick one, complete it halfheartedly, eat dinner, and then collapse in bed and read until it was properly time for sleep. I was a worker or a home-maker, but now I have settled back into both.
Long amounts of time on the train and bus can get irksome, but I've better adapted to it now. Walking the brisk 2km 'hike' to the station is always beneficial, as I then get less restless, and am more immersed in my book. An alternate to reading that I really enjoy on public transport are little puzzle books, whether based around words, math, or logic. I think that it's important to fill this time as productively as impossible, since I am one of those people who constantly complains about the swiftness of time. A three plus hour daily commute quickly adds up, but sometimes I do spent part of that time staring wistfully out the window (especially in the changing of the seasons).
While I do tend to miss home (and my variety of companions) a lot, being a librarian (or library employee, technically), for me at the least, is the most personally rewarding profession. I love the blend of social and educational aspects, but I'll write more on this another time.
To combat the sudden time apart, Peter and I have started communicating with notes. It started when I had to rush off on the first day back after the New Year, so I did a quick little doodle in a bed, paired it with a delightful pun, and set off. A few days off this, and I awoke in the morning to find a return note, and that, as they say, was that.
Tonight I was feeling particularly exhausted after work (due to very little sleep, due to a certain man waking me up as I was just drifting off...), and was at a loss of what to make dinner. Peter requested no pasta, but didn't mind rice. After browsing a few books, I settled on a quick curry. A very quick curry. It was rather enjoyable and tasty considering the time put in (recipe to come). Pete left for work, and before I knew it, I was actually in a cooking mood. I whipped up some eggplant sub-balls, more tofgurt (tofu yogurt), and a strawberry compote. My delivery from Choices Gluten-Free Bakery arrived, and their panini is the best bread in the world (post-Coeliac disease, that is).
It's so much easier to drift off to sleep knowing you have a good morning tea, lunch, and dinner awaiting you. (Sweet dreams...!)
